The Village of Leadhills

The Village

Beautiful rural location in the heart of the Southern Uplands, a mile from Dumfries and Galloway. Leadhills is Scotland's second highest village, famous for its 'Scottish gold'. It has the atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands and yet is just an hour's drive from Glasgow.

Of particular interest to walkers is the Southern Upland Way, which cuts a path across the region from Portpatrick to Moffat; and the 7 Stanes mountain bike trails offer some of the world's best mountain biking to people of all abilities. The Southern Uplands offers a landscape of rolling hillsides, wild rivers, deep forests, dramatic glens and a beautiful varied seascape. Home to a wealth of artists and craftmakers, writers, musicians and artisans, this beautiful, unspoiled region has provided inspiration for talented people over the centuries and continues today. Rich in history and culture, there are many places of historical interest for the sightseer to explore and experience, including ancient castles, the stone remains of early man, crumbling abbeys, historical houses, national parks, museums, galleries, and history trails.

On the doorstep:
  • The Hopeton Arms Hotel, serving bar meals and full dinners, is 200m from the front door of Ebenezer Hall.
  •  The village shop is next door and is open 7 days per week (deliveries are also available from Tesco).
  • Leadhills has the UK's highest golf course - pay in the village shop.
  • The Southern Upland Way runs through Wanlockhead, a mile from Leadhills, also home to the Lead Mining Museum and visitor centre.
  • Leadhills Narrow Gauge Railway is a fantastic attraction for children and the young at heart and runs throughout the summer.
  • When the snow falls Leadhills has its very own volunteer-run ski slope.

Local Activities

The Southern Upland Way passes through the village of Wanlockhead, a mile from the house - stunning views and wild landscapes.

A few miles away is the fantastic Crawick Multiverse, Charles Jencks' stunning work of land art at Sanquhar. Using stone, in the fashion of megalithic monuments, the landscape is inspired by themes of space, astronomy and the cosmos.

For the more active, the region hosts a wide variety of sporting activities, including some great river and sea fishing, field sports, golf (28 courses), mountain biking, walking, hill climbing, water sports and swimming.

The Galloway Forest's Dark Sky status provides an opportunity for stargazers to experience the spectacular splendour of the universe from the quiet of the woods, while the Solway Firth showcases a diverse seascape from rocky cliffs to sweeping, sandy beaches.

Just half an hour away is New Lanark,  a unique 18th century mill village and world heritage site. Visitors can see recreated millworkers’ houses, historic working machinery and the nearby ‘Falls of Clyde’ waterfalls. There’s a Mill Shop and Mill Café, where home-made ice-cream is on offer.

And if golf is your thing, Leadhills has the UK's highest course.  And in 2 hours you can be in Gleneagles or St Andrews and experience some of Scotland's finest golf courses.

Shopping and family entertainment are easily accessible from the many towns and villages scattered across South Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway. Summertime is gala time when many of the towns and villages hold their centuries-old pageants involving the entire community. A warm welcome to guests is always at the top of the agenda.
